APQC: Discovering New Product Opportunities
The American Productivity and Quality Center
In Fall of 2013, we worked closely with the American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC) out of Houston, TX, to help them discover new opportunities for productizing a key component of their intellectual property: the APQC Process Classification Framework.
APQC tasked us with a simple, but important challenge: help them to develop new product and service ideas for a piece of intellectual property they’d developed over the course of a couple decades. Already a core component of their business, the team needed a fresh perspective and approach for finding hidden opportunities that they could capitalize on.
During a full-day design thinking workshop, we worked with the APQC team to better understand their customers, discover new insights about their product they’d not considered, and collate those understandings into a prioritized and vetted list of potential initiatives to explore in the coming year. By doing this work with the core team in an interactive and collaborative environment, we equipped them with design thinking tools they could use later, and were able to gain full team buy-in for the initiatives explored.
The result? We were tasked with developing a prioritized list of 5-6 strong product/service ideas to explore in the coming year. We developed over 250 as a team.
